Discussion points for teachers

1.How many are there in total?
Discuss how to calculate the total number of butterflies starting with the larger number and then adding the multiples of 10.
176 + 30 + 40 = 246

2.How many frogs will the Conservation Park have soon?
Discuss the number of frogs that will come from the frogspawn. One group and then another group with 10 more.
235 + 50 + 60 = 345

3.Is this correct?
Discuss whether the estimation is correct and how the children may have calculated the total.
This is not correct. 459 + 60 = 519; 459 + 70 = 529; 459 + 80 = 539. There could be 519, 529 or 539 seahorses.

4.If there are more red fish than green fish, help the children calculate how many of each colour there could be.
Discuss the different combinations of tens that could be used to describe the amount of fish. This question is open-ended for the children to explore.
638 fish in total. 548 blue fish. 548 + 90 = 638. There are more red fish than green fish which means that there could be combinations of 80 and 10, 70 and 20, 60 and 30 or 50 and 40.

5.What type of animal will they see?
Discuss the method used in calculating the attraction number and what the different paw prints represent.
The children will go to the tigers. Lions = 149 + 30 + 50 = 229; tigers = 169 + 20 + 30 = 219; bears = 149 + 30 + 60 = 239.

Optional discussion points:

Are there other ways to represent tens? What would they look like in column addition? Do tens always look the same?
