Discussion points for teachers

1. Help Alfie and Uncle Paul work out the area of the carpet that is around Alfie's bed.
Discuss what shape the carpet area is. Discuss different ways the area of the carpet could be calculated. Discuss which method would be the most simple to calculate.
10m2 (8m x 1.5m = 12m2; 2m x 1m = 2m2; 12m2 – 2m2 = 10m2).

2. What is the total area of the bookshelves in Alfie’s reading zone?
Discuss what shape the carpet area is. Discuss different ways the area of the carpet could be calculated. Discuss which method would be the most simple to calculate. Discuss how to work out the lengths of the missing sides needed to calculate the area of the shelving.
5m2 (8m x 1.5m = 12m2; 7m x 1m = 7m2; 12m2 – 7m2 = 5m2).

3. Do you agree with Uncle Paul?
Discuss the strategy that Uncle Paul has suggested and discuss whether this is possible. Discuss possible solutions that could be used to solve the problem.
Uncle Paul is incorrect. To calculate the area, he needs to split the compound shape into three rectangles

4. Use your chosen method to calculate the area of the gaming area.
Discuss the strategies from the previous question. Discuss methods for calculating missing values. Discuss which strategy is the easiest to calculate.
43m2 (9m x 5m = 45m2; 1m x 2m = 2m2; 45m2 – 2m2 = 43m2).

5. Help Alfie split this area into at least two different zones and calculate the area of each zone.
Discuss the shape given. Discuss how the area can be split into at least two zones that are compound shapes. Discuss strategies for calculating the area of the zones discussed.
Total area = 63m2
Various possible answers, for example: Purple zone has an area of 34.5m2 (5m x 6m = 30m2; 1.5m x 3m = 4.5m2; 30m2 + 4.5m2 = 34.5m2).
Light blue zone has an area of 28.5m2 (4m x 6m = 24m2; 1.5m x 3m = 4.5m2; 24m2 + 4.5m2 = 28.5m2).
