A Halifax-based firm has been announced as a winner in the regional stage of the Barclays Entrepreneurs Awards, winning the Scale-Up Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Headquartered in north Halifax, Classroom Secrets Ltd, aims to be the most trusted educational resource provider for teachers, schools, parents and tutors world-wide. The business prepares whole class guided reading in a variety of genres together with challenge activities and has disrupted the market by giving teachers access to a vast product range, including extensive activities for Maths.

Established in 2013 by Claire and Ed Riley, the business turnover is now in excess of £1million with over 50 employees and with a customer base of 100,000 - approximately one fifth of the market in the UK. The business has more than doubled the number of users accessing resources over the past year.

Claire Riley, Managing Director, Classroom Secrets Limited said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be a regional winner for the Barclays Scale-Up Entrepreneur of the Year award which recognises the fast growth and development of the business. We’re hugely passionate about what we do and pride ourselves on our agility to meet the needs of schools today by adapting to changes in the National Curriculum and providing pupils with the best education possible. We're all about service to the education industry and that's what our new Teachers' Podcast is all about.”

Other Yorkshire regional winners include:

  • Social Entrepreneur of the Year – Time Out Children’s Homes Ltd
  • International Expansion of the Year – BioPhorum Operations Group Limited
  • Icon of the Year – Sean Ramsden

Commenting on the awards, Caroline Pullich, Barclays Head of SMEs in Yorkshire said: “The Barclays Entrepreneur Awards are a celebration of our clients and an official recognition of their entrepreneurial successes and leadership. This is the fourth year of the awards and each regional winner will go forward to the national stage, which will recognise clients from across the UK.”

These regional winners will be invited to attend the National Awards Dinner in London on Thursday 10th October, which will be attended by the other winning entrepreneurs and industry experts.

A national judging panel made up of key industry leaders and influencers will then select the overall winners and present the awards on the night.
