It’s the end of the school trip for Alex and Sophia and time for the children to head home. Pupils will need help to work out the decimal and fraction of a number of people standing at a bus stop, work out the decimal and fraction of the amount of fuel used and left in the tank of the bus, work out how much money Alex has spent both as a fraction and as a decimal and finally solve questions as part of a quiz.

This Learning Video Clip has been designed as a consolidation tool for steps 7, 8 and 9. It contains content relevant to all these steps and can be used in parts to recap a particular step or in on its own at the end of a teaching sequence for the included steps.

1. Help Sophia work out the answer.
Discuss the decimal number and how to convert it into a fraction.
0.4 = 4/10

2. How much fuel has he used? Write your answer as a decimal and fraction.
Discuss the decimal amount of fuel used. Discuss how to convert the decimal into a fraction.
0.58 = 58/100

3. Help him to work out how much fuel he has left. Show your answer as a decimal and a fraction.
Discuss the amount of fuel left in the tank. Discuss how to show this as a decimal and then as a fraction.

4. He now has £1 left. How much has he spent? Give the answer as a fraction and a decimal
Discuss the amount that Alex has left and how much he started with. Discuss this amount as a fraction and a decimal.

5. Spot the mistakes.
Discuss what Alex has written. Discuss how to check the answers and spot his mistake.
Alex has incorrectly worked out the number of red sweets. The correct answer should be 2/5 = 0.4

6. Work out how many are Strawberry Dreams as a decimal and a fraction
Discuss the amount of strawberry dreams and the total of chocolates in the box. Discuss this as a fraction and decimal.
2/16 = 0.125

7. Can you help them solve the question?
Discuss the questions and methods. Discuss how to solve each question and the place value of each digit.
6/8 = 0.75; 7/5 = 1.4; 4/5 = 0.8; 7/8 = 0.875
