Step 4: Divide by 100 Year 4 Multiplication and Division Learning Video Clip

Syeda is competing the Ski Jump competition today and Hamish is going to support her. They will be converting prices from yen (¥) back to pounds (£) and centimetres to metres by dividing by 100. They also need to check which jump Syeda should use, her placing in the competition and the cheapest route back down the mountain.

Discussion points for teachers

1. In the shop, the prices are given in yen (¥) but Hamish wants to know how much the Union Flag would cost in pounds (£).
Discuss the conversion rate of 1:100. Discuss the cost of the other flags, not just the Union Flag.
¥1,200 = £12

2. Her target distance is 59m. Which of the hills could she use?
Discuss converting the range of each jump back into metres to match Syeda’s intended distance. Discuss which of the jumps intended range her distance would fit within. Discuss which would be safest to use if she jumps further or less than she intends.
Syeda = 59m. Small Hill = 45m-60m, Medium Hill = 55m-74m and Normal Hill = 70m-99m therefore she could use either Small Hill or Medium Hill.

3. Convert the distances to metres and then order the competitors by who jumped the furthest.
Discuss which distances need converting into metres. Discuss if it is better to have jumped further or shorter and use that to put the athletes in the correct order.
1st Henrika – 68m; 2nd Greta – 67m; 3rd Syeda – 61m; 4th Yuka – 58m; 5th Celine – 56m

4. Help Hamish and Syeda find the cheapest route back to hotel in pounds. Check if Hamish is correct.
Discuss the possible routes getting from the starting point back to the hotel. Discuss if it is better to convert every price on the chosen route or whether to convert them all at the end.
Cheapest route: 14 (¥800) → 10 (¥700) → 9 (¥1,300) → 12 (¥1,900) → 6 (¥3000 → 4 (¥1,100) = ¥6,100 which converted to pounds is £61. Hamish is correct.
