EYFS Mathematics Counting and Recognising Numbers Peg Activity Cards (5-10) - People Who Help Us

This learning activity enables children to practise their counting and numeral recognition in an independent context. Children can subitise the small amounts, or count using one-to-one correspondence, and then select the corresponding numeral by placing a clothes peg in the correct place. Alternatively, the cards showing number pieces can be provided which will support children’s quick recognition of the maths manipulative.

Development Matters Statement Links

3 and 4 year olds
(M-3) Say one number for each item in order: 1,2,3,4,5.
(M-6) Link numerals and amounts: for example, showing the right number of objects to match the numeral, up to 5.

Children in Reception
(M-21) Count objects, actions and sounds.
(M-22) Subitise.
(M-23) Link the number symbol (numeral) with its cardinal number value.

Early Learning Goal
- Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number.
- Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5.
- Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts.
