Discussion points for teachers

1. Help Yasin to work out if he will get any change if he pays for a bag of food with his coins.
Discuss how much money Yasin has. Discuss how much a bag of food costs. Discuss how to work out if he will get any change (count on or count back) after paying 45p.
Yasin has 3 x 20p coins which makes 60p. 60p – 45p = 15p Yasin will get 15p change.

2. Help Scarlett to work out if she will get any change if she pays with her coins.
Discuss how much money Scarlett has. Discuss how many pence in £1. Discuss how to work out if she will get any change after paying 78p.
Scarlett has 1 x £1. £1 = 100p. 100p – 78p = 22p Scarlett will get 22p change.

3. Help Yasin to work out if he will get any change. Discuss the cost of the tractor ride (89p).
Discuss how much money Yasin has (2 x 50p = 100p = £1). Discuss how many pence in £1. Discuss how to work out if he will get any change.
£1 = 100p – 89p = 11p

4. Scarlett and Yasin buy three things and pay with the five twenty pence coins. Their change is a mixture of silver and bronze coins. Which three things could they have bought and how much change did they get?
Discuss the prices of the different items. Discuss how much money Yasin and Scarlett have been given (5 x 20p = £1). Discuss how many pence in £1. Discuss which coins are silver and bronze. Discuss how to add three prices. Discuss if a certain strategy would help (start with the cheapest items?). This question is open-ended for the children to explore.
Various answers, for example: bread (64p) and two eggs (2 x 12p = 24p) costs 88p. £1/100p – 88p = 12p. The change could be 2 x 5p and 2 x 1p.
