Differentiation for Year 1 Counting in Coins:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support counting money more efficiently using 1p, 2p, 10p coins and using mathematical vocabulary to compare different amounts.
Expected Questions to support counting money more efficiently using 2p, 5p, 10p coins and using ‘more than’ or ‘less than’ to compare different amounts.
Greater Depth Questions to support counting money more efficiently using combinations of 2p, 5p and 10p coins and using inequality symbols <, >, = to compare different amounts.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Reasoning)
Developing Determine whether (up to three) coins are added together correctly by counting in 1s, 2s or 10s. All the same coin type.
Expected Determine whether (up to five coins) are added together correctly by counting in 2s, 5s or 10s. All the same coin type.
Greater Depth Determine whether a combination of (up to six) coins are added together correctly by counting in 2s, 5s or 10s, and adding totals together.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Identifying which coin is needed to purchase the object, using 1p, 2p, 10p.
Expected Identifying which two coins are needed to purchase the object, using 2p, 5p, 10p.
Greater Depth Identifying which combination of coins can be used to purchase the object, using a combination of 2p, 5p, 10p.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain whether the coins displayed can be used to purchase the object, based on its price tag using a combination of 1p, 2p, 10p.
Expected Explain whether the coins displayed can be used to purchase the object, based on its price tag, using 2p, 5p, 10p.
Greater Depth Explain whether the coins displayed can be used to purchase the object, based on its price tag, using a combination of 2p, 5p, 10p.

Differentiation for Year 2 Count Money - Notes and Coins:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support combining up to 3 coins and one note to find different monetary values.
Expected Questions to support combining up to 5 coins and up to two notes to find different monetary values.
Greater Depth Questions to support combining coins and notes to find different monetary values, using a mixture of images, words and numbers with multiple coins of the same value.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Problem Solving)
Developing Count 3 different coins and add one note to give a new total. (Includes £5 or £10).
Expected Count 4 different coins and add one note to give a new total. (Includes £5 or £10).
Greater Depth Count a range of different coins and add two more notes to give a new total. (Includes £5, £10, £20).

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing To offer a solution to a problem using 3 different notes and coins. (Includes numbers and words).
Expected To offer a solution to a problem using 4 or 5 different notes and coins. (Includes numbers and words).
Greater Depth To offer a solution to a problem using a range of different combinations of notes and coins. (Includes words only).
