Discussion points for teachers

1. Match the question and answers to find the correct code.
Discuss strategies for subtracting fractions, such as converting mixed numbers to improper fractions.
The code is 1, 3, 2.

2. Solve the clues to find where each of the magnets should be placed.
Discuss if the same strategies can be used for each question, note the different vocabulary used in each question.
Magnet A: 5/18 ; magnet B: 17/18 ; magnet C: 7/18

3. Where could the final magnet go? Find all possibilities, giving your answer as ninths.
Discuss the values for the final magnet and how the existing calculations could be changed to give one of these values as the answer.
Any answer between 8/18 and 16/18 which has an even numerator so can be simplified to ninths. This question is open for the children to explore.

4. Solve the calculation to locate the correct shelf.
Discuss strategies to solve the calculation. Discuss how the answer can be represented on the bookshelves if a full shelf holds 21 books.
3  1/7 – 2  2/3 = 10/21 which is represented by shelf B.

5. Help Rae, Roman and Trig choose the correct locks.
Discuss strategies for solving a two-step problem. Identify the simplified mixed number and the simplified improper fraction to locate the two locks.
15  4/5 – 6  3/4 = 9  1/20 ; 9  1/20 – 7/8 = 8  7/40 or 327/40 when represented as an improper fraction.
