Will your class round up or round down? Give them the option to explore both concepts by using this Year 4 Round to the Nearest 1,000 Discussion Problem. It includes two different deep-level problems to solve, one in a relatable context, and the other in the context of a game. We'd recommend using this with children who have a good understanding of rounding, so that they can apply all of their skills to complete each task.
Great to use in class as a paired or small group activity. Also, it can be useful to use in an intervention group to challenge children to explain their thinking and use mathematical language even more. You could give this to very competent individuals as a homework or challenge task too; the choice is up to you! We've given an example answer for both questions for children to compare their answers to. This can be used to discuss other outcomes too.
