Step 7-9: Year 5 Fractions Consolidation of Steps 7, 8 and 9

Guiseppe the pizza maker’s niece (Chiara) and Barney the baker’s nephew (Tom) have come to visit. Guiseppe and Barney decide to break for lunch and take a walk around the rest of the food market. They have fun on the Dizzydish, test their strength on the Whackamole game, and share some food.

This Learning Video Clip has been designed as a consolidation tool for steps 7, 8 and 9. It contains content relevant to all these steps and can be used in parts to recap a particular step on its own at the end of a teaching sequence for the included steps.

Discussion points for teachers

1. Tom has five eighths of his juice left. Chiara has six eighths of her juice left. Giuseppe drinks seven eighths of their juice altogether. How much juice is left?
Discuss the two parts to the question (addition followed by subtraction. Discuss the process when denominators are the same.

2. Three twelfths of the Dizzydish ride are already taken up. Barney, Giuseppe, Tom and Chiara take up a further four twelfths of the ride. How much of the ride is taken up altogether?
Discuss which operation the question is requiring.

3. Barney has hit three eighths and five twelfths. What is his total score? Does he win a prize?
Discuss how the method changes when the denominators are different. What common multiple is in both denominators?

4. Tom eats four ninths of the baguette and Chiara eats two sixths of the baguette? How much of the baguette do they eat altogether?
Discuss the common multiple for 6 and 9. Recap on how to simplify the final answer using knowledge of equivalent fractions.

5. What combinations of flavours could they fit in their tubs?
Discuss how to add multiple fractions with different denominators. This question is open-ended for the children to explore.
