Step 12: 7 Times Table and Division Facts Year 4 Multiplication and Division Learning Video Clip

Hamish and Syeda travel to the Yukigassen (annual snowball battle in Japan). An event organiser needs help sorting team vests using multiples of seven, Syeda explores different ways of showing multiplication using equal groups and Hamish uses division to try and work out how many marshmallows he will get for his hot chocolate.*

*This Learning Video Clip has been designed as a consolidation tool for steps 11 and 12. It contains content relevant to all these steps and can be used in parts to recap a particular step or on its own at the end of a teaching sequence for the included steps.

Discussion points for teachers

1. Help the organiser by finding the bibs which are the odd ones out (red bibs).
Discuss which of the bib numbers are in the seven times table and strategies for counting in 7s.
62 and 82

2. Help the organiser by finding the bibs which are the odd ones out (yellow bibs).
Discuss which of the bib numbers are in the seven times table and strategies for counting in 7s. Discuss how zero links to all multiplications.
23, 64 and 54

3. How many snowballs are there?
Discuss how many snowballs are in each group and how to find the total by multiplying by the number of equal groups.
42

4. How could the yellow team prepare their snowballs in a different way?
Discuss the commutative aspect of multiplication, the number of equal groups and fact families involving multiplication and division.
The snowballs could be in seven equal groups of six.

5. Syeda throws 11 snowballs at the target. At least 7 of them hit the target. How many bonus points could Syeda have scored?
Discuss the possible number of snowballs that could have hit the target and how many points could have been scored. This question is open-ended for children to explore.
Various answers, for example: 63 points (7 x 9).

6. If the marshmallows were to be shared equally between the people in the queue, how many would each person get?
Discuss the relationship between multiplication and division and how many equal groups of marshmallows can be created by sharing them between seven people.
Each person would get 8 marshmallows.
