There’s a new bad guy in town! Join Colin and the superheroes as they try to defeat this new menace using the power of statistics. Pupils will help Colin and the superheroes by creating pictograms using 2,5 and 10; interpret pictograms and draw and interpret block diagrams. Will the superheroes succeed, or will someone else come to their rescue?

This Learning Video Clip has been designed as a consolidation tool for steps 4, 5 and 6. It contains content relevant to all these steps and can be used in parts to recap a particular step or in on its own at the end of a teaching sequence for the included steps.

Discussion points for teachers

1. Use the tally chart to complete the pictogram.
Discuss the tally chart and the key for the pictogram. Discuss how this data should be presented.
Bread – 1 circle; Croissants – 3 circles; Crumpets – 2 circles; Cereals – 4 circles; Eggs – 5 circles.

2. Complete the pictogram using the information collected.
Discuss the information on the clipboard. Discuss the key on the pictogram and how the data should be presented.
Chairs – 5 circles; Tables – 2 circles; Cupboards – 4 circles; Pictures – 3 circles

3. Answer the questions about the pictogram.
Discuss the pictogram and what it shows. Discuss the value of each circle and discuss what each question is asking.
1. 35 bagels were damaged altogether; 2. 20 more crumpets than croissants were damaged; 3. 25 muffins and pastries were damaged altogether.

4. Work out the totals for each breakfast item if the key was 2, 5 or 10.
Discuss the number of items and what the different totals would be if the key had different values.

5. What does the block diagram tell us about the damage The Breakfaster has caused?
Discuss the block diagram and the values of each block. Discuss the types of questions and statements that could be derived from the data.

6. Create a block diagram showing the information Colin has collected.
Discuss the scale used on the block diagram, discuss how to correctly complete the block diagram.
