Discussion points for teachers

1. They decide to opt for the group ticket. How much do they each need to pay towards the ticket?
Discuss calculating the cost of the ticket per person by dividing the amount by 4.
48 ÷ 4 = £12 each

2. They decide to go on four rides each hour to spread them across the day. How many hours will it take them to do all the rides?
Discuss finding the total number of rides in the information given and then dividing this number by 4.
20 ÷ 4 = 5 hours

3. The ride can fit 32 passengers, four in each carriage. If 28 people got on the ride last time, how many empty carriages were there?
Discuss calculating how many carriages there must be altogether by dividing 32 by 4, and then dividing 28 by 4 to work out the number of carriages that would be full.
32 ÷ 4 = 8 carriages; 28 ÷ 4 = 7 full carriages, therefore one empty carriage.

4. As they are waiting, they count 84 people in the queue. How many carriages will this queue need?
Discuss dividing 84 by 4 to work out the number of carriages needed.
16 ÷ 4 = 4 carriages

5. How much does one hot dog cost if Shelley spent £12 altogether?
Discuss dividing the total amount spent by 4 to work out the cost of one hot dog + one drink. Then use this amount to determine the individual price of a hot dog and a drink based on the information given.
£12 ÷ 4 = £3. If a hot dog is twice as much as a drink, then drinks are £1 and hot dogs are £2.

6. If they visited more than 4 but less than 8 side stalls each hour, how many could they have visited altogether?
Discuss working out the number which could be divide by 4 hours to makes an answer within the range given. This question is open-ended for the children to explore.
Various answers, for example: 20 stalls ÷ 4 = 5; 24 stalls ÷ 4 = 6; 28 stalls ÷ 4 = 7

National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 3: (3C6) Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables

Mathematics Year 3: (3C7) Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods
