Discussion points for teachers

1. Write the coordinates for each location.
Discuss which axis we read first. Discuss which axes have positive and/or negative coordinate values.
A = (-3, 2); B = (2, 3); C = (-2, -3); D = (3, -2)

2. What mistake has she made?
Discuss which coordinate value should be positive or negative and why.
She has plotted (-3, 4). She read the axes the wrong way round.

3. Plot the points on the grid and join all the points to see what shape her journey takes.
Discuss accuracy in plotting points and joining up points using a ruler.
Her journey makes a kite shape.

4. Write the coordinates of X.
Discuss what we know about points A, B and X. Which coordinate values might help us and why?
X = (-25, 20)

5. Write the coordinates of Pearl’s ship.
Discuss what we know about each point. Discuss which information is important and why. Discuss which extra points we could annotate on the grid and discuss why this helps.
Pearl’s ship is at point (8, 5)
