National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 2: (2M4a) Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times
Mathematics Year 3: (3M4c) Tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including using Roman numerals from I to XII, and 12-hour and 24-hour clocks

Mathematics Year 3: (3M4d) Estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute; record and compare time in terms of seconds, minutes and hours; use vocabulary such as o’clock, a.m./p.m., morning, afternoon, noon and midnight

Differentiation for Year 2 Tell Time to 5 Minutes:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support telling the time to 5 minutes. Using 5 minute intervals and starting at o’clock, quarter past/to and half past the hour.
Expected Questions to support telling the time to 5 minutes. Using multiple intervals of 5 minutes.
Greater Depth Questions to support telling the time to 5 minutes. Using multiple intervals of 5 minutes and the clock face only has the numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Problem Solving)
Developing Match the 2 analogue clocks to the correct times.
Expected Match the 3 analogue clocks to the correct times.
Greater Depth Match the 3 analogue clocks to the correct times. Clock faces only have numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain if a statement about the position of the minute hand at the end of an activity is correct. Statements to include finish time only.
Expected Explain if a statement about the position of the minute hand at the end of an activity is correct. Statements to include start and finish time.
Greater Depth Explain if a statement about the position of the minute hand at the end of an activity is correct. Statements to include start time and duration of activity.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Problem Solving)
Developing Read the time presented in words and calculate the finishing time using a single 5 minute interval.
Expected Read the time presented in words and calculate the finishing time using multiple 5 minute intervals.
Greater Depth Read the time presented in words and calculate the finishing time using multiple 5 minute intervals. Clock face only uses numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9.

Differentiation for Year 3 Turns and Angles:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support telling the time to 5 minutes using clocks with all hours marked in numerals.
Expected Questions to support telling the time to 5 minutes using clocks with either 12, 3, 6 and 9 marked in numerals or all hours marked in Roman numerals.
Greater Depth Questions to support telling the time to 5 minutes using clocks with 12, 3, 6 and 9 marked in Roman numerals.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Problem Solving)
Developing Find the odd one out by matching times given in words with times shown on analogue clocks. All clocks have all hours marked with numbers 1-12.
Expected Find the odd one out by matching times given in words with times shown on analogue clocks. All clocks have either 12, 3, 6 and 9 marked in numerals or all hours marked in Roman numerals.
Greater Depth Find the odd one out by matching times given in words with times shown on analogue clocks. All clocks have 12, 3, 6 and 9 hours marked in Roman numerals.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain which statement is correct regarding the position of the minute hand on an analogue clock (digits 1-12) at a given time.
Expected Explain which statement is correct regarding the position of the minute hand on an analogue clock (Roman numerals I-XII) at a given time.
Greater Depth Explain which statement is correct regarding the position of both hands on an analogue clock (Roman numerals (I-XII) at a given time.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Read a simple word problem and choose between two different times shown on analogue clocks. All clocks have all hours marked with numbers 1-12.
Expected Read a simple word problem and choose between two different times shown on analogue clocks. All clocks have either 12, 3, 6 and 9 marked in numerals or all hours marked in Roman numerals.
Greater Depth Read a simple word problem and choose between two different times shown on analogue clocks. All clocks have 12, 3, 6 and 9 hours marked in Roman numerals.
