National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 2: (2M3a) Recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value

Mathematics Year 2: (2M3b) Find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money

Mathematics Year 2: (2M9) Solve simple problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change

Mathematics Year 3:(3M9a) Add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p in practical contexts

Differentiation Year 2 Find Change:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support finding change from given amounts up to £1 (multiples of 10p only).
Expected Questions to support finding any amount of change from given amounts (multiples of 10) up to £1.
Greater Depth Questions to support finding any amount of change from any amount up to £1. Children are required to find the amounts of multiple coins e.g. two 20p.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Problem Solving)
Developing State which item could be bought from the list, when the amount of change is calculated. Cost of items to be multiples of 10 only within £1.00.
Expected State which item could be bought from the list, when the amount of change is calculated and then calculate the change leftover. Cost of items to be multiples of 10 only within £1.00
Greater Depth State which item could be bought from the list, when the amount of change is calculated. Costs of items within £1. Children are required to find the amounts of multiple coins e.g. two 20p.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing State which coins could be given when the amount of change is calculated. Using coins from 10p to 50p.
Expected State which coins could be given when the amount of change is calculated. Using coins from 1p to £1.
Greater Depth State which coins could be given when the amount of change is calculated. Using coins from 1p to £1. Children are required to find the amounts of multiple coins e.g. two 20p.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain which character has the correct change. Using multiples of 5 and 10 to £1.
Expected Explain which character has the correct change. Amounts up to £1.
Greater Depth Explain which character has the correct change. Amounts up to £1. Children are required to find the amounts of multiple coins e.g. two 20p.

Differentiation For Giving Change Year 3:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support calculating change when purchasing 1 item, using multiples of 5p with partly completed number lines, bar and part whole models.
Expected Questions to support calculating change when purchasing up to 2 items, using increments of 1p with partly completed number lines, bar and part whole models.
Greater Depth Questions to support calculating change when purchasing 2 items, using increments of 1p and including conversions from pounds to pence, with blank number lines, bar and part whole models.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain which answer is correct when calculating change. Questions involve purchasing 1 item, using increments of 5p.
Expected Explain which answer is correct when calculating change. Questions involve purchasing up to 2 items, using increments of 1p.
Greater Depth Explain which answer is correct when calculating change. Questions involve purchasing up to 2 items requiring conversion from pounds to pence.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Calculate the cost of an item from the amount paid and the change given, using increments of 5p
Expected Calculate the cost of an item from the amount paid and the change given, using increments of 1p
Greater Depth Calculate the cost of an item from the amount paid and the change given.
Calculations involving conversion from pounds to pence. Amounts in increments of 1p

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Problem Solving)
Developing Calculate the change needed when purchasing 1 item and give 3 possible combinations for the coins that could be given, using increments of 5p.
Expected Calculate the change needed when purchasing up to 2 items and give 3 possible combinations for the coins that could be given, using increments of 1p.
Greater Depth Calculate the change needed when purchasing up to 3 items and give 3 possible combinations for the coins that could be given, using increments of 1p. Questions involve conversion from pounds to pence and vice versa.
