National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 3: (3G3a) Draw 2-D shapes and make 3-D shapes using modelling materials; recognise 3-D shapes in different orientations and describe them

Mathematics Year 4: (4G2a) Compare and classify geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles, based on their properties and sizes

Differentiation for Year 3 Draw Accurately:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support drawing lines accurately to the cm. Horizontal lines only.
Expected Questions to support drawing lines accurately to the nearest mm. Mostly horizontal and vertical lines with some slight diagonals. Measurements written in expanded form i.e. 10cm 8mm.
Greater Depth Questions to support drawing lines accurately to the nearest mm. Horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines, some which must meet a point. Measurements written in expanded form i.e. 10cm 8mm.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Reasoning)
Developing Decide if a statement is true or false by measuring a horizontal line to the nearest centimetre.
Expected Decide if a statement is true or false by measuring a slight diagonal line to the nearest millimetre. Answers written in expanded form i.e. 10cm 8mm.
Greater Depth Decide if a statement is true or false by measuring two lines that meet at a point to the nearest millimetre. Answers written in expanded form i.e. 10cm 8mm.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Explore and draw combinations of lines to total a given horizontal line. Find two possibilities using lines drawn accurately and written to the cm.
Expected Explore and draw combinations of lines to total a given vertical line. Find two possibilities using lines drawn accurately to the nearest millimetre and written in expanded form i.e. 10cm 8mm.
Greater Depth Explore and draw combinations of different lines to total a given diagonal line. Find three possibilities using lines drawn accurately to the nearest millimetre and written in expanded form i.e. 10cm 8mm.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Given two statements about measuring using a ruler, decide which is correct and why (simple rounding mistakes).
Expected Given two statements about measuring using a ruler, decide which is correct and why (ruler position mistakes).
Greater Depth Given two statements about measuring using a ruler, decide which is correct and why (various mistakes).

Differentiation for Year 4 Triangles:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support identifying, sorting and drawing triangles. All triangles presented with a horizontal base. Up to 3 triangles per question.
Expected Questions to support identifying, sorting and drawing triangles. Most triangles presented with a horizontal base. Up to 4 triangles per question.
Greater Depth Questions to support identifying, sorting and drawing triangles. Triangles presented in different orientations. Up to 4 triangles per question, with some triangles presented in other shapes.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Problem Solving)
Developing Identify a type of triangle within a rectangular shape with 6 triangles. Most triangles presented with a horizontal base.
Expected Identify types of triangle within a rectangular shape with at least 10 triangles. Most triangles presented with a horizontal base.
Greater Depth Identify types of triangle within a shape. Triangles presented in different orientations and within other triangles.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Reasoning)
Developing Decide whether a statement describing the triangle within a logo is correct. Both triangles presented with a horizontal base.
Expected Decide whether a statement describing 3 triangles within a logo is correct. Most triangles presented with a horizontal base.
Greater Depth Decide whether a statement describing 3 triangles within a logo is correct. Triangles presented in different orientations, within other shapes.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Determine which of 3 triangles is the odd one out and why. All triangles presented with a horizontal base.
Expected Determine which of 4 triangles is the odd one out and why. Most triangles presented with a horizontal base.
Greater Depth Determine which of 4 triangles is the odd one out and why. Triangles presented in different orientations, with some triangles presented in other shapes.
