National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 4: (4P2) Describe movements between positions as translations of a given unit to the left/right and up/down

Mathematics Year 4: (4P3a) Describe positions on a 2D grid as co-ordinates in the first quadrant

Mathematics Year 5: (5P2) Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed

Differentiation for Year 4 Move on a Grid:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support one-step translations (left, right, up or down) of singular points on a 5x5 grid.
Expected Questions to support two-step translations (left or right and up or down) of singular points on a 10x10 grid using a 1:1 scale.
Greater Depth Questions to support two-step translations of singular points on a 10x10 grid. Scales varied and points may be plotted between increments.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Problem Solving)
Developing One-step translation of a specified point to create the vertices of a 3 or 4 sided polygon on a 5x5 grid.
Expected Two-step translation of an unspecified point to create the vertices of a 4 sided polygon on a 10x10 grid.
Greater Depth Two-step translation of two unspecified points to create the vertices of a 4 sided polygon on a 10x10 grid with varying scales. Several possibilities.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Identify new coordinates based on given one-step translation, using a 1:1 scale. Find two possible answers.
Expected Identify new coordinates based on given two-step translation, using a 1:1 scale. Find two possible answers.
Greater Depth Identify new coordinates based on given two-step translation, using varying scales and points between increments. Find two possible answers.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Identify the original coordinates of a point translated in one-step on a 5x5 grid with a 1:1 scale.
Expected Identify the original coordinates of a point translated in two steps on a 10x10 grid with a 1:1 scale.
Greater Depth Identify the original coordinate of a point translated in two steps on a 10x10 grid with varying scales and points between increments.

Differentiation for Year 5 Translation:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support identifying and drawing translated shapes. 1x1 square only.
Expected Questions to support identifying and drawing translated shapes. Polygons with up to 6 sides.
Greater Depth Questions to support identifying and drawing translated shapes. Irregular or compound shapes with up to 8 sides.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Reasoning)
Developing Use knowledge of translation to decide if a completed translation is correct (1x1 square only).
Expected Use knowledge of translation to decide if a completed translation is correct (polygons with up to 6 sides).
Greater Depth Use knowledge of translation to decide if a completed translation is correct (includes irregular shapes with up to 8 sides).

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Identify the two correct translations (from a choice of three).
Expected Identify the correct translations and complete the missing translation.
Greater Depth Identify the correct translations and complete the missing translation (includes irregular shapes with up to 8 sides).

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain whether a statement is correct.
Expected Explain whether a statement is correct and support answers by giving an example.
Greater Depth Explain whether a statement about methods of translation is correct, and support answers by giving an example.
