- Multiply by 100 Year 4 Reasoning and Problem Solving with answers.

**National Curriculum Objectives**

Mathematics Year 4: (4C6a) Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12

Mathematics Year 4: (4C6b) Use place value, known and derived facts to multiply and divide mentally, including: multiplying by 0 and 1; dividing by 1; multiplying together three numbers

**Differentiation:**

**Varied Fluency**

**Developing **Questions to support multiplying 1-digit numbers by 100. Questions use Base 10 as visual support.

**Expected **Questions to support multiplying 2-digit numbers by 100. Questions use Base 10 as visual support.

**Greater Depth **Questions to support multiplying 3-digit numbers by 100 using a variety of manipulatives. Requires a deeper understanding of place value by also multiplying three numbers, for example, 451 x 10 x 10. Questions use Base 10 as visual support.

**Reasoning and Problem Solving**

**Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Reasoning)**

**Developing **Explain why a calculation is correct or incorrect. Multiplying 1-digit numbers by 100.

**Expected **Explain why a calculation is correct or incorrect. Multiplying 2-digit numbers by 100.

**Greater Depth **Explain why a calculation is correct or incorrect. Multiplying 3-digit numbers by 100. Requires a deeper understanding of place value by also multiplying three numbers, for example, 451 x 10 x 10.

**Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)**

**Developing **Choose the correct digit cards to solve the calculations. Multiplying 1-digit numbers by 10 and 100.

**Expected **Choose the correct digit cards to solve the calculations. Multiplying 2-digit numbers by 10 and 100.

**Greater Depth **Choose the correct digit cards to solve the calculations. Multiplying 3-digit numbers by 100 and by also multiplying three numbers, for example, 451 x 10 x 10.

**Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)**

**Developing **Explain a visual representation of multiplying a 1-digit number by 100. Questions use Base 10 as visual support.

**Expected **Explain a visual representation of multiplying a 2-digit number by 100. Questions use Base 10 as visual support.

**Greater Depth **Explain a visual representation of multiplying a 3-digit number by 100. Questions use a variety of manipulatives.

Hi,

I am trying to find the resources for the following two steps:

Divide by 10

Divide by 100

Are they not available yet or am I simply not looking carefully enough?

Many thanks

Nigel

Please check these resources. They do not relate to multiplication by 100.

Hi, these questions have been designed using the reasoning and problem solving questions provided by White Rose Maths. The main skill in the questions is converting from metres to centimetres which requires multiplying by 100. I hope this clears things up.

Thanks, Kyle

Hey,

You need to actually take a look at these resources before replying to people because they are perimeter of rectilinear shapes – not multiplying by 100.

Adam GreenhalghJanuary 14, 2018

Hi Adam, this specific question has been designed using the reasoning and problem solving example provided by White Rose Maths. The main skill here is converting the units of measure from metres to centimetres which requires multiplying by 100. The skill of calculating perimeters is covered in the block prior to this one, again provided by White Rose Maths. We hope this clears up any further queries about this resource. Thanks, Sian

It is difficult though, because we haven’t yet covered how to calculate perimeter.

Marie SkipperJanuary 6, 2018

Hi Marie,

Year 4 Block 3 Measurement, Length and Perimeter (which is the block before this one) covers this.

Thanks, Emily

this is supposed to be multiply by 100 but it is actually find the perimeter of a shape!

elizabeth carrJanuary 4, 2018

Hi Elizabeth,

This question is relevant to the example question given on the White Rose Multiplication and Division unit. This particular question involves using the method of multiplying by 100 through converting units. Emily

How does this activity relate to multiplying by 100?

vicky cameronNovember 15, 2017

Hi Vicky, this matches the White Rose example and relates to multiplying by 100 as the units need to be converted.
