Teaching Note

We recommend teaching the terminology of noun and verb in Year 1 so that children understand the difference between the word types and the jobs that they have within sentences. The resources for this step will include the terminology of noun and verb.

Differentiation:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support recognising nouns and verbs. Using CVC and CCVC/CVCC words.
Expected Questions to support recognising nouns and verbs. Using high frequency or phonetically decodable words.
Greater Depth Questions to support recognising nouns and verbs. Includes some compound nouns and irregular verbs. Using some words which are not easily decodable.

Application and Reasoning
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Application)
Developing Use the clues to identify a noun or verb. Word bank containing CVC & CVCC/CCVC words provided.
Expected Use the clues to find two possible solutions when identifying a noun or a verb.
Greater Depth Use the clues to find three possible solutions when identifying nouns and verbs.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain whether the given word is a noun or a verb. CVC & CVCC/CCVC words only.
