Discussion points for teachers

1. What could Dec’s time have been?
Discuss which prime numbers are between 10 and 20. This question is open-ended for the children to explore.
Various answers, for example: 11; 13; 17; 19. 

2. What could the number be?
Discuss the prime factors of numbers. Discuss factors of numbers between 40 and 50. Discuss factors of different numbers between 40 and 50.

3. After the rule change, how many points will each racer receive?
Discuss what each of the new rules are and how many points each racer receive, both for their position in the race and the extra points. Discuss how many extra points each athlete will be given. 

         

4. Are the organisers correct? Discuss who scored the most points and who scored the least.
Discuss whether the organisers would be correct in awarding the gold medal to Hamish.
No, because Dec Athlon scored the most points overall, but Hamish and Dec did score the same amount of extra points.
