Ever wondered what it would be like to be a fully-fledged pilot? Then take to the skies with this Year 5 Properties of Shape Activity Pack.

Using their knowledge of angles and shapes, children complete a series of questions in order to pass the first stage of their pilot training. From navigating their way across the world to preparing for emergency situations, children are presented with opportunities to secure their knowledge and understanding of the properties of shape whilst using and applying their reasoning and problem-solving skills in a fun and engaging way.

Ideal for paired or small group work, this resource is designed to generate excitement and inspire curiosity whilst encouraging mathematical discussions to take place.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Use the properties of rectangles to deduce related facts and find missing lengths and angles
  • Distinguish between regular and irregular polygons based on reasoning about equal sides and angles
  • Identify 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids, from 2-D representations
  • Know angles are measured in degrees: estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles
  • Identify angles at a point and one whole turn (total 360), angles at a point on a straight line and 1/2 a turn (total 180 ) and other multiples of 90
  • Draw given angles, and measure them in degrees
