National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 5: (5S2) Solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in a line graph

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support reading and interpreting line graphs showing 1 data set using scales in increments of 1 or 2, where all increments are shown.
Expected Questions to support reading and interpreting line graphs showing up to 2 data sets using any scale where all increments are shown.
Greater Depth Questions to support reading and interpreting line graphs showing up to 2 data sets using any scales where some increments are missing.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Reasoning)
Developing Read and interpret the line graph to work out which set of data it is presenting. Includes 1 data set using scales in increments of 1 or 2, where all increments are shown.
Expected Read and interpret the line graph to work out which set of data it is presenting. Includes 2 sets of data using any scale where all increments are shown.
Greater Depth Read and interpret the line graph to work out which set of data it is presenting. Includes 2 sets of data using any scale where some increments are missing.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Read and interpret the line graph to identify and explain the mistake. Includes 1 data set using scales in increments of 1 or 2, where all increments are shown.
Expected Read and interpret the line graph to identify and explain the mistake. Includes 2 sets of data using any scale where all increments are shown.
Greater Depth Read and interpret the line graph to identify and explain the mistake. Includes 2 sets of data using any scale where some increments are missing.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain if an interpretation about a line graph is correct. Includes 1 data set using scales in increments of 1 or 2, where all increments are shown.
Expected Explain if an interpretation about a line graph is correct. Includes 2 sets of data using any scale where all increments are shown.
Greater Depth Explain if an interpretation about a line graph is correct. Includes 2 sets of data using any scale where some increments are missing.

  1. Mostly I love your resources – they are brilliant! Just a question about some of the line graphs: why have you started zero on the x axis not at the intersection with the y axis? eg 3b and 9b VF. This is unusual. Also, the numbers on the x axis are not lined up with the lines on the graph paper, and I would normally teach children to put numbers on the lines and not between them, when constructing graphs (eg 8b and 9b VF). If this is not done for a good reason, would it be possible to change them, please?

  3. There are a few errors on this resource. Question 6a on the varied fluency the labelling of the y axis is wrong as it supposed to be a graph about height yet the axis labelled “Number of points won”. Additionally, the data represented on the graph in question 3b is discreet and not continuous and therefore a line graph would not be the best way of representing this data.

    • Hi, thanks for letting us know – the error on the axis has been corrected and 3b is now continuous data 🙂
