Discussion points for teachers

1. Describe the path she can take from each point on the map to the next point, ending up back at point A.
Discuss good strategies for tracking the steps and directions moved.
A to B = 4 left, 2 down
B to C = 1 right, 5 down,
C to D = 5 right, 1 up,
D to A = 2 left, 6 up

2. Draw the new location and write the coordinates of each vertex.
Discuss choosing a point and translating that point first then translating all the other points using the same movement.
A = (-1, 3) ; B = (2, 3) ; C = (-1, 1) ; D = (2, 1)

3. Draw the new position where Pearl hides the treasure.
Discuss translating point A first. Discuss how you will know where to position the other points.
See coordinate grid. A will be at point (1, 1) and all other points translated and drawn accurately. (2, -1), (-2, -1), (-1, 1)

4. Draw the locations where the treasure could be hidden and describe the translation made.
Discuss which information is important and why. Discuss moving each vertex in turn to -2 on the y axis then drawing in the rest of the shape. Discuss tracking the translation of one point to describe the translation. This question is open-ended for the children to explore.
The coordinates could be: A = (0, -2) ; B = (0, -5) ; C = (3, -5). This translation is 1 unit left and 6 units down.
The coordinates could be: A = (0, 1) ; B = (0, -2) ; C = (3, -2). This translation is 1 unit left and 3 units down.
The coordinates could be: A = (-3, 1) ; B = (-3, -2) ; C = (0, -2). This translation is 4 units left and 3 units down.

National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 6: (6P2) Draw and translate simple shapes on the coordinate plane, and reflect them in the axes
Mathematics Year 6: (6P3) Describe positions on the full coordinate grid (all four quadrants)
