National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 1: (1F1a) Recognise, find and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity

Mathematics Year 1 (1M1): Compare, describe and solve practical problems for lengths and heights [for example, long/short, longer/shorter, tall/short, double/half]

Mathematics Year 2: (2F1a) Recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3 , 1/4 , 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity

Differentiation for Halving Shapes or Objects Year 1:

Varied Fluency
Developing Draw a line to cut items in half, all items symmetrical and halved by vertical line.
Expected Draw a line to cut items in half, all items symmetrical and halved either by vertical or horizontal line.
Greater Depth Draw a line to cut items in half, items maybe asymmetrical and halved either by vertical, horizontal or diagonal line.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Reasoning)
Developing Consider statements and visual representation, identify any errors and explain reasoning. Simple shapes and no visualisation needed.
Expected Consider statements and visual representation, identify any errors and explain reasoning. Some complex shapes and no visualisation needed.
Greater Depth Consider statements and visual representation, identify any errors and explain reasoning. Knowledge of compound shapes and visualisation needed.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Shade 2 simple shapes to match given labels.
Expected Shade 3 shapes to match given labels.
Greater Depth Shade 3 complex shapes to match given labels.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Problem Solving)
Developing Symmetrical images used where vertical lines halve the image.
Expected A mix of asymmetrical and symmetrical images where vertical lines halve the images.
Greater Depth Asymmetrical images used where vertical, horizontal or diagonal lines halve the images.

Differentiation for Recognise a Half Year 2:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support recognising a half of objects and shapes including circles and squares, using a vertical line and beginning to use the fraction 1/2.
Expected Questions to support recognising a half of lengths, groups of objects and shapes including circles, triangles and quadrilaterals when the half is shown using a horizontal or vertical line; using the fraction 1/2.
Greater Depth Questions to support recognising a half in lengths, mixed objects and shapes including circles, triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons when the half is shown using a mixture of horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines; using the fraction 1/2.

Reasoning and Problem Solving
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain if an image including one object represents a half.
Expected Explain if an image including a number of objects represents a half.
Greater Depth Explain if an image including a number of mixed objects represents a half.

Questions 2, 5 and 8 (Problem Solving)
Developing Match the halves together and complete the half for the odd one out; using shapes.
Expected Match the halves together and complete the half for the odd one out; using objects.
Greater Depth Match the halves together and complete the half for the odd one out; using objects in different orders and/or mixed objects.

Questions 3, 6 and 9 (Reasoning)
Developing Explain which statement about the half (1/2) of a shape is correct and why.
Expected Explain which statement about the half (1/2) of an object or shape, including circle, triangles and quadrilaterals when the half is shown using a horizontal or vertical line, is correct and why.
Greater Depth Explain which statement about the half (1/2) of an object or shape, including circles, triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons when the half is shown using a mixture of horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines is correct and why.
