Whole-school ideas to celebrate the love of reading for World Book Day

If you work in a school, or have school-aged children then it’s very likely that you are preparing in some form for World Book Day.

World Book Day is celebrated on Thursday 6th March 2025. It is an event organised by the charity which aims to change lives through a love of books and reading. As well as raising awareness – children are given a book token of £1 which they can use towards selected books.

We hope you enjoy reading about some of our favourite ways our teachers have enjoyed celebrating World Book Day throughout the years.

  • School Book Swap! - Encourage every child where possible to bring a book that they are happy to swap. Display them all in the hall and the children can take home a new book to enjoy.

  • The masked reader – think the masked singer but with books! Teachers are disguised with a mask and the children have to guess who is reading what.

  • Host a reading morning – invite families or members of the local community to come in and enjoy reading with the children.

  • Decorate your classroom door – each class decorates their classroom door with images linked to a popular book. The other classes have to go around the school and guess which book it represents.

  • Dress an object as a character from a book or to represent a book – this can be a potato / shoe box / wooden spoon.

  • Host a competition for reading in unusual places (or play reading bingo!)

  • Show and Tell – ask your pupils to bring in an object that represents their favourite book. Others can ask yes/no questions to guess!

  • Curl up with a good book – pop a virtual logfire on the whiteboard, make some hot chocolate and marshmallows (not too hot!), make a den and get comfy either sharing a story together or reading independently. What a treat!

If you are looking for some specific resources for World Book Day then take a look at our activity packs and reading quizzes.

However you are celebrating World Book Day – then have a great time.
