Introducing Primary Maths Tutoring Resources

Searching for tutoring resources, finding none and thus making your own, takes time and effort. It’s also wholly frustrating. And it’s mega cliched, but we all know - for us tutors, time = money. It’s not like you get explicitly paid for planning and resourcing…

So, we’re introducing some new tutoring resources! We’re starting with maths, but have an eye on reading and GPS too. The focal point of the offering is a tutor mat. This concept has been formed both from the surveys we have sent out regarding what tutors want and the invaluable feedback we have received, as well as from discussions within the Classroom Secrets back rooms.

These mats aim to be really practical – games and practical questions, with supporting materials – to help children to really get to grips with the objective in a more relaxed environment than the classroom. These are then supplemented by VF, RPS and SATs-style questions to help consolidate their learning. That being said, it’s up to you and your student if you want to do all of it – it’s good to be flexible!

The idea is to have all of the main elements on one printable page, to be cost-efficient and sustainable, that children can then answer either on the sheet or wherever they feel comfortable (I enjoy a whiteboard). The supporting materials can also be printed, and help to play the games, or give children the opportunity to work things out (like questions that use digit cards) with actual digit cards.

The first unit is up and running – naturally it’s Place Value – and it seems like a good time of year to go back and refresh given 1.) SATs are coming and 2.) Place Value was ‘like ages ago or whatever’*. We actively welcome feedback, as we want these to be good as possible (I’ve started using them with my own tutoring students) so please get in touch. And also let us know if there’s anything else you might desire in order to make your tutoring journey a little easier. Currently, we’re looking at worked examples, as a way to help with those trigger points, and I’ll come back to you with that soon!

*Verbatim from one of my students, (and possibly every other one across the country).
