Perhaps you’ve just taken over as Science Lead and you’re not sure where to start. Maybe you just want reassurance that you’ve got a grip of what’s happening across the year groups. Or maybe you just want to build subject knowledge in science… Our scheme has been developed with you in mind!
Let’s start with our science overview. This document provides you with a breakdown of each of the year group’s units, as well as the individual lessons they include. Here you can be assured that everything is aligned to the national curriculum and that the scientific enquiry types are clearly outlined. We’ve included an explanation of how each resource can be used, as well as an insight into the investigation resources you may need – but please don’t worry – our investigations don’t require anything expensive or hard to resource!
Our science unit plans are available for all year groups for both teachers and science leads. We like to think of these as the key that unlocks each unit. Here, you can clearly see how units such as materials, animals including humans and plants develop across key stages, preventing both repetition and gaps in learning. In addition to this, our unit plans include vocabulary, science capital, subject knowledge and common misconceptions; they may even help you to identify potential CPD opportunities.
Which leads us on to our lessons… Our lessons have been designed to have everything a teacher could need (perhaps minus a hot cup of tea!) Each lesson includes a snappy pre- and post-lesson quiz, defined vocabulary, subject knowledge in the notes, photographs to link to real-life, and our favourite bit – the link to a career. So, if you’ve a pupil who adores learning about space, they can follow up with exploring the role of an astronomer or an astronaut!
Tracking vocabulary across year groups can be hard to manage. That’s why we created our vocabulary progression document, ensuring that children are introduced to vocabulary at the right time. We’ve made sure that definitions are both child-friendly and consistent and link directly to our lessons. We want to make sure that children’s vocabulary is developed, while giving opportunity to revisit and secure language.
Which finally leads us on to assessment... Our pre- and post-unit assessments have been carefully tailored so as not to overwhelm pupils. We’ve used a variety of question styles to engage children and kept most of our assessments to one page – no one wants to be printing hundreds of sheets! But for both science leads and teachers, these assessments provide opportunities for identifying misconceptions and gaps as well as show progression over time and supporting the transition between year groups.
So why not take a look for yourself and, as always, if you have any questions, please just get in touch.
