Step 6-7: Consolidation of Steps 6-7 Year 5 Multiplication and Division Learning Video Clip

The Greeks arrive back from Troy and the Spartans want to organise and train their troops. Selene and Orion must find a number of squadrons they can evenly distribute their new recruits into. Meanwhile, Alexios the architect is wrongfully arrested and must work out some possible missing digits in a division-based inequality statement. The Spartans work out how many metres of ground each squadron must protect and the ration distribution has mistakes which need correcting. Finally, the troops have to be split into formations, but with a given remainder staying behind to help the commanders.

This Learning Video Clip has been designed as a consolidation tool for steps 6 and 7. It contains content relevant to all these steps and can be used in parts to recap a particular step or in on its own at the end of a teaching sequence for the included steps.

Discussion points for teachers

1. Can you find two possible answers?
Discuss the upper limits of a possible answer to the division calculation and the short division method. Discuss which divisors leave remainders.
There are 2 answers without a remainder: & squadrons (344 + 150 = 494) or 8 squadrons (301 + 150 = 451).

2. What digits could Alexios use to give answers with a remainder of 1 which fit the inequality statement?
Discuss ways to speed up the trial and error process, such using times tables, inverse operations, working from the units column first, etc. This question is open-ended for children to explore.
Various answers, for example: 8,076 ÷ 6 > 5,409 ÷ 3 > 7,462 ÷ 7

3. How many more metres will each squadron have to protect at site B?
Discuss the operations (division, and subtraction to find the difference) which need to be used to solve the multi-step problem.
178m.

4. Find and correct all three mistakes.
Discuss common errors and mistakes the children have made before, as well as recapping the correct method.
Loaves: 1 has been transferred from the tens to the units column, instead of the necessary 4. The correct answer is 517 r2. Olives: 2 should have been transferred from the tens to the units column and applied to the final part of the calculation. The correct answer is 358 r2. Fish: instead of dividing 2 by 7 as the first calculation, 7 has been divided by 2. The correct answer is 386 r6.

5. What single-digit number of groups leaves 4 soldiers remaining?
Discuss all the division calculations allowed by the wording of the problem which might give the desired answer.
3,577 ÷ 9 = 397 r4
