EYFS Twinkle Twinkle Maths Adult-Led Activities

This Twinkle Twinkle practical maths activity is adult-led with a clear and easy to follow structure. Counting beyond 20 is covered in three different activities that link to the nursery rhyme through the setting of space. A session could involve all the activities or a selection based on the needs of the children.

Development Matters and Early Learning Goal Links:
3 and 4 year olds
Know that the last number reached when counting a small set of objects tells you how many there are in total (‘cardinal principle’).
Recite numbers past 5.
Say one number for each item in order: 1,2,3,4,5.

Children in Reception
Count objects, actions and sounds.
Subitise.
Explore the composition of numbers to 10.

Early Learning Goals
Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number.
Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5.
Verbally count beyond 20, recognising the pattern of the counting system.
