Key Vocabulary

fact family: A fact family is a set of number sentences that use the same three numbers.

addition sentence: An addition sentence puts two parts together using the + symbol.

parts: The parts are the numbers we add together.

whole: The whole is the total. It stays next to the = symbol.

Adult-Led Practical Activities

• Activity 1: swap counters on a ten frame to find all four addition sentences.

• Activity 2: use digit cards to build a fact family with three chosen numbers.

You will need:

• ten frames and counters in two colours

• digit cards with + and = cards

• interlocking cubes and whiteboards

Why not try…

• roll two dice, build the total with cubes and write the family

• share bean bags or natural objects between two hoops and chalk the four sentences

• work out the number hidden under a sticky note
