The Year 1 Fact Families – The Eight Facts PowerPoint guides both teachers and children through the lesson, including use of the varied fluency, reasoning and problem solving, practical activities and continuous provision resources. Key learning information about this step:
Key Vocabulary
whole: Altogether means how many there are when we add the groups.
part: An addition sentence uses + and = to show adding.
equals: The = sign means "is equal to".
fact family: A fact family uses the same 3 numbers.
Adult-Led Practical Activities
• Activity 1: Autumn Leaf Families. Children sort autumn leaves into two colours and write the fact family.
• Activity 2: Number Piece Families. Children join two number pieces and write all eight facts.
You will need:
• autumn leaves (real or paper) in two colours
• number pieces (1 to 10)
• a large part-whole model and mini whiteboards
Why not try…
• Bead String Split - Children slide beads into two groups to make two parts. They write the fact family.
• Beanbag Buckets -Children throw beanbags into two buckets. They count each bucket and write the fact family.
• Conker Hide - Hide some conkers under a leaf or cup. Children say the whole and the two parts, then build the fact family.
Varied Fluency
• Q1: Use a picture of apples and oranges to complete four facts in a fact family.
• Q2: Complete a part-whole model and four facts written the other way round.
Reasoning and Problem Solving
• Q1: Reasoning – spot and explain that Dev has only written 6 of the 8 facts in the fact family.
• Q2: Problem Solving – find different ways to split 5 counters between a box and a pot.
Continuous Provision
