Key Vocabulary

part: A part is one of the smaller groups that make up the whole group.

whole: The whole is made when all of the parts are put together.

part-whole model: A part-whole model shows the whole and the parts it is made from.

altogether: Altogether means the total when all of the parts are put together.

Adult-Led Practical Activities

• Activity 1: fill a part-whole model with cubes and find different ways to split the whole.

• Activity 2: make a large part-whole model with hoops and step into the parts.

You will need:

• whiteboards and pens or paper plates/paper circles

• cubes or counters

• large hoops and tape or string

Why not try…

• splitting a bead string into two parts.

• using the two parts on a domino to find the whole.

• hiding one part under a pot and work out how many are hidden.

Varied Fluency

• Q1: Complete a part-whole model by drawing the missing part.

• Q2: Use a part-whole model to complete the sentences.
