The Year 1 Subtraction - Find a Part PowerPoint guides both teachers and children through the lesson, including use of the varied fluency, reasoning and problem solving, practical activities and continuous provision resources. Key learning information about this step:
Key Vocabulary
whole: Altogether means how many there are when we add the groups.
part: An addition sentence uses + and = to show adding.
subtraction: We use the - symbol to subtract. We say minus.
subtraction sentence: The whole comes first in these subtraction sentences.
Adult-Led Practical Activities
• Activity 1: Car Park. Children park some toy cars and work out how many are still in the car park.
• Activity 2: Shake and Spill. Children spill double-sided counters and write matching subtraction sentences.
You will need:
• toy cars (or cubes) and a paper car park
• double-sided counters and a cup
• a large part-whole model and mini whiteboards
Why not try…
• Washing Line – peg 10 (or fewer) socks on a washing line. Take a few down. Children work how many are still on the line.
• Domino Cover – children count all the dots on a domino. Cover half the domino up. Children work out how many dots are hidden.
• Hoop Hop – From a group of 10 children, some jump into a hoop. Children work out how many are still outside the hoop.
Varied Fluency
• Q1: Find how many bags do not have a hole. Complete the part-whole model and subtraction sentence.
• Q2: Find how many children have a school dinner. Complete the part-whole model and subtraction sentence.
Reasoning and Problem Solving
• Q1: Reasoning – spot that Emi has started a subtraction sentence with a part, not the whole.
• Q2: Problem Solving – split 8 cubes into two parts and write two subtraction sentences.
Continuous Provision
• Role play area – sell cakes and find how many are unsold.
• Maths area – find the number piece that fills the gap.
• Malleable area – find how many dough ice creams have no flake.
• Fine motor area – move pompoms and find how many are still in the pot.
• Sand area – find how many sandcastles are still standing.
• Reading area – act out a frog rhyme and subtract.
• Investigation area – catch fish and find how many are still in the pond.
• Maths area – take counters off a ten frame and subtract.
