The Year 1 Subtraction – Take Away/Cross Out (How Many Left?) PowerPoint guides both teachers and children through the lesson, including use of the varied fluency, reasoning and problem solving, practical activities and continuous provision resources. Key learning information about this step:
Key Vocabulary
take away: When we take away, some are moved away from the group.
left: How many are left means how many are still there.
cross out: We cross out to show what has been taken away.
first, then, now: We tell a take away story in this order.
Adult-Led Practical Activities
• Activity 1: Falling Leaves. Children make some leaves fall off a tree and tell a first, then, now story.
• Activity 2: Draw and Cross Out. Children draw a group, cross some out and say how many are left.
You will need:
• a paper tree and paper leaves with sticky tack
• mini whiteboards and pens
• counters to check with
Why not try…
• Five Little Ducks - Sing the Five Little Ducks song. Take one duck away each verse. Children say how many ducks are left.
• Bus Stop - Put some small world people on a toy bus. Some people get off. Children count how many are still on the bus.
• Sandcastle Knock Down - Children build sandcastles. They knock some down, then count how many are still standing.
Varied Fluency
• Q1: Complete a first, then, now story about birds flying away.
• Q2: Cross out counters on a ten frame to complete a part-whole model and a sentence.
Reasoning and Problem Solving
• Q1: Reasoning – spot and explain that Ella has given the number taken away, not the number left.
• Q2: Problem Solving – work out how many apples there could have been before some were eaten.
Continuous Provision
