The Year 1 Subtraction on a Number Line PowerPoint guides both teachers and children through the lesson, including use of the varied fluency, reasoning and problem solving, practical activities and continuous provision resources. Key learning information about this step:
Key Vocabulary
number line: A number line shows numbers in order.
start: We start on the first number in the subtraction.
count back: We count back to subtract.
land on: The number we land on is the answer.
Adult-Led Practical Activities
• Activity 1: Floor Number Line Hop. Children hop back along a floor number line and say the subtraction.
• Activity 2: Roll and Jump Back. Children roll a dice and jump a counter back along a number line.
You will need:
• a large floor number line 0 to 10 (chalk or masking tape)
• number lines 0 to 10, counters and a 1 to 3 dice
• mini whiteboards and pens
Why not try…
• Rocket Countdown - Make a cardboard rocket and a sliding number line from 10 to 0. Children count back to blast off.
• Hopscotch Back – Use a hopscotch grid. Children start on a number and hop back, then say the subtraction.
• Sailing Home - Draw a river number line on your water tray with a ‘harbour’ at 0. Children sail a boat back along the river to show subtractions.
Varied Fluency
• Q1: Draw jumps back on a number line for a take away story and complete the subtraction sentence.
• Q2: Show a subtraction on a number line by circling the start and drawing the jumps back.
Reasoning and Problem Solving
• Q1: Reasoning – spot that Emi has jumped forwards instead of back on the number line.
• Q2: Problem Solving – find different subtractions on a number line that land on 2.
Continuous Provision
• Maths area – jump a toy frog back along a number line
• Small world area – drive cars back along a numbered road
