The Year 2 Count in 3s PowerPoint guides both teachers and children through the lesson, including use of the varied fluency, reasoning and problem solving, deeper reasoning and scaffolded resources. Key learning information about this step:
Key Vocabulary
count forwards: To count on. The numbers will get bigger or greater (0, 1, 2, 3, 4).
count backwards: To count back. The numbers will get smaller (4, 3, 2, 1, 0).
sequence: A series of numbers or images that follow a set pattern, for example they might increase by 2 each time. We can group objects in different ways. Groups can include any amount.
number track: A representation of the order of numbers when counting. It can go forwards or backwards. It is similar to a number line, but numbers can go up or down in jumps of 1s, 2s, 3s, etc.
Varied Fluency
Knowledge Organiser
• Designed to support all children via key information and examples.
For the purple sections of the four levels, copy and paste these from the first sheet of the varied fluency resource.
Scaffolded Examples
• Guided practice completing number tracks in 3s and using a number line.
Support
• Q1: two number tracks in 3s; the last two numbers missing.
• Q2: two jumps of 3 forwards on a number line.
• Q3: two forwards sequences; circle the incorrect number.
Core
• Q1: two number tracks in 3s; two numbers missing on each.
• Q2: three jumps of 3 forwards on a number line.
• Q3: one forwards, one backwards; circle the incorrect number.
Stretch
• Q1: two longer number tracks in 3s; three numbers missing.
• Q2: four jumps of 3 backwards on a number line.
• Q3: two longer sequences; circle the two incorrect numbers.
Reasoning and Problem Solving
Support
• Q1: Reasoning - decide whether a character is right counting forwards in 3s, number line given.
• Q2: Reasoning - decide whether a number track counts in 3s, using counters to support.
• Q3: Problem Solving - complete three number tracks counting forwards in 3s, with one condition.
Core
• Q1: Reasoning - decide whether a character is right counting forwards in 3s.
• Q2: Reasoning - compare two number tracks and decide whether both count forwards in 3s.
• Q3: Problem Solving - complete three number tracks, counting backwards in 3s, with one condition.
Stretch
• Q1: Reasoning - decide whether a character is right counting backwards in 3s, including to zero.
• Q2: Reasoning - compare two number tracks and decide whether both count backwards in 3s.
• Q3: Problem Solving - complete three number tracks counting forwards or backwards in 3s, with two conditions.
Deeper Reasoning
The question in this set focuses on finding possible routes through a maze and identifying the shortest route when counting backwards to deepen understanding in counting in steps of 2, 3, and 5 from 0.
