The Year 3 Subtract 10s Across a 100 PowerPoint guides both teachers and children through the lesson, including use of the varied fluency, reasoning and problem solving, deeper reasoning and scaffolded resources. Key learning information about this step:
Key Vocabulary
multiple: A product of one number multiplied by another number. For example: multiples of 10 are the products of numbers multiplied by 10.
partitioning: The splitting of a number into different parts. For example: the number 547 can be partitioned into 500, 40 and 7.
number line: A horizontal or vertical line which has numbers placed at equal points. Number lines can be used to show either positive or negative numbers. Most number lines begin at 0.
number track: A representation of the order of numbers when counting. It can go forwards or backwards. It is similar to a number line, but numbers can go up or down in jumps of 1s, 2s, 3s, etc.
Varied Fluency
Knowledge Organiser
• Designed to support all children via key information and examples.
For the purple sections of the four levels, copy and paste these from the first sheet of the varied fluency resource.
Scaffolded Examples
• Counting back in 10s across a hundred, then subtracting a multiple of 10 on a number line; both jumps prompted.
Support
• Q1: Complete two number lines by counting back in 10s; four of the six values are given on each.
• Q2: Subtract a multiple of 10 using a number line; the key intermediate value is given.
• Q3: Complete two pairs of related subtractions; the first calculation in each pair is provided.
Core
• Q1: Complete two number lines by counting back in 10s; three of the six values are given on each.
• Q2: Subtract a multiple of 10 using a number line; children complete the intermediate and final values.
• Q3: Complete four subtractions without a model.
Stretch
• Q1: Complete two number lines by counting back in 10s; one value is given on each.
• Q2: Subtract a multiple of 10 using a number line without intermediate values.
• Q3: Find the multiple of 10 subtracted when the starting number and answer are given.
Reasoning and Problem Solving
Support
• Q1: Reasoning - judge a character’s partitioned subtraction, supported by a labelled number line.
• Q2: Reasoning - find possible 2-digit multiples of 10 that were subtracted, supported by a number sequence.
• Q3: Problem Solving - complete a missing tens digit and answer so the result falls within a given range; find two possibilities.
Core
• Q1: Reasoning - judge a character’s partitioned subtraction across a hundred, supported by a blank number line.
• Q2: Reasoning - find possible 2-digit multiples of 10 that were subtracted from a 3-digit number.
• Q3: Problem Solving - complete a missing tens digit and answer so the result falls within a given range; find four possibilities.
Stretch
• Q1: Reasoning - judge a character’s partitioned subtraction across a hundred without a number line.
• Q2: Reasoning - find all possible 2-digit multiples of 10 that were subtracted from a 3-digit number.
• Q3: Problem Solving - find all missing-digit possibilities that make the answer fall within a given range.
Deeper Reasoning
The questions in this set focus on exploring possible subtraction calculations using 2-digit multiples of ten and 3-digit numbers to deepen understanding in adding and subtracting numbers mentally, including three-digit numbers and ones, three-digit numbers and tens and three-digit numbers and hundreds.
