Resource GuideWriting

Staring at a blank piece of paper and being told to write is daunting for most people! Children need to feel inspired to write, and they need the tools to succeed. We have put together a toolkit of resources to unlock your children’s potential. Our units are based around popular books which model creative, quality sentences. The worksheets guide children through a journey of exploration of the language used within the book. Then, through high quality modelling done by the expert in class (that’s you!), children will have the opportunity to get creative with their own writing.

Writting resources, Teacher Guidance

Teacher Guidance

Our Teacher Guidance provides an overview of all the resources we have created linked to a specific book. If you have the pleasure of reading the book to the children for the first time, we have also provided some hook activities, which can help immerse the children in the themes of the book. The guidance then takes you through what every child should aim to achieve through each activity, but also provides adaptations to support and challenge them. We also link all our activities to National Curriculum Objectives!

Writting resources, Teaching PowerPoints

Teaching PowerPoints

Our PowerPoints contains a digital version of each of the worksheets in the unit. In each lesson, you will have the opportunity to get your children sharing their ideas. The PPT also provides the opportunity for you to model how to complete the activities and share your expectations. The option to adapt the activity for those that need it is simple! Use the slides as a shared activity, or model how children could develop their vocabulary further. Some slides within the PPT go beyond the learning provided on the worksheets to allow you to complete the teaching described in the Teacher Guidance document.

Writting resources, Vocabulary Development

Vocabulary Development

To be an effective writer, we need a plethora of vocabulary at our disposal. Books are a bank of words ready to absorb and reuse to great effect in our own writing. Through exploring the book, children will be able to gather and record vocabulary. Through using our resources, children can take these words and ensure they understand them, use them correctly and put them together to create effective sentences! Our Vocabulary Banks, Word Banks and Character Emotions resources all promote this skill.

Writing Opportunities

Once children have explored the vocabulary used within a book, have taken the time to develop an understanding and discovered how the words can be used in sentences, it is time to write! For each writing unit, a model text is provided for you to explore the features of the text type and to discuss the language used. The model text can be used to support children in their planning of their own writing. Children can also draw upon all their previous learning to craft their own short piece of writing.
