A fantastic resource to practise skills in measuring, our EYFS Ordering by Height Learning Activity can be used alone or practically with cubes. This learning resource enables children to make comparisons between objects relating to height. Children cut out the items and order them by height. Children may also number the items 1-3 in order of height. Children can work practically to create the tower representations using cubes and order by height.

In other areas of the classroom, provide a variety of measuring tools such as tape measures or rulers for children to explore; children to sort objects by height then place in labelled hoops.

It covers the following objectives for children in reception:

(M-32) Compare length, weight and capacity.

Curriculum Objectives

  • There is no Early Learning Goal for shape, space and measures, but it is important that the curriculum includes rich opportunities for children to develop their spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics
