What's included in The Ancient Greeks History at Home resource and why is it useful?

The Ancient Greeks History at Home is a one-page activity sheet to send home to parents and carers at the start of the topic. It includes what children will be learning, great conversation starters, ideas to try at home, famous figures to explore and places to find out more, covering Athens and Sparta, the first Olympics and how the Greeks influence our lives today.

What's on the sheet?

Learning: the timeline of Ancient Greece from the Minoan and Mycenaean eras to Alexander the Great, the cities of Athens and Sparta, the origins of the Olympics, daily life, myths and gods, and Greek influences on government, architecture, medicine and mathematics.

Conversation starters: questions such as "Would you rather have lived in Athens or Sparta? What might your daily routine have looked like?" and "Why do you think the Greeks created myths to explain the world around them?"

Ideas to try at home: designing a Greek pot pattern, a Greek-style tasting plate, designing a mythical monster and spotting Greek influences around you.

Famous figures: Archimedes, Pythagoras, Cynane of Macedon and Hypatia of Alexandria, with dates and a line on each.

Books and websites: Who Let the Gods Out? by Maz Evans, Groovy Greeks by Terry Deary, BBC Bitesize and the British Museum.

How do our History at Home resources work?

Our History at Home resources sit alongside our history scheme. Send them home to parents and carers at the start of each topic to promote learning at home without it being a taxing homework-style resource. They also help parents build their own knowledge of the topic, so they can connect with what their child is learning in school.

Teach the full unit with our six Ancient Greeks lessons.
