Children can continue to secure their understanding of adding mixed numbers with this Year 5 Add Two Mixed Numbers Homework activity. This resource includes two varied fluency questions and a problem-solving question where they encounter equivalent fractions too. We've already differentiated these questions to three levels of challenge in order to support all levels of learner in your class.

Use as a homework activity, as the resource type suggest, or as an extension activity in class. Alternatively, you could include it in an intervention session to offer further support or additional challenge; the choice is really up to you! An easy-to-follow answer sheet is provided and can be used by any adult in the class, or by children as a peer or self-assessment tool.


Curriculum Objectives

  • Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other and write mathematical statements > 1 as a mixed number [for example, 2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5 ]
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and denominators that are multiples of the same number
