Let children open their minds and apply their knowledge of place value and addition to our Year 5 Add Whole Numbers with More than Four Digits Discussion Problem. This resource includes two deeper level problem-solving questions that will test children in different ways. The first, will test their methodical thinking and strategy skills, the second, will test their trial and error skills.

We'd recommend that children have a good grasp of adding whole numbers with more than four digits before they tackle these questions. This can be achieved by completing and working through the accompanying resources in this lesson. An example answer has been provided for children to compare their answers to. This can be a great teaching opportunity for children to work out how we came to the answer we've given, especially if their answer differs.
