Our Year 5 Estimate Area Teaching PPT is the ideal resource to show children how to estimate the area of an irregular shape.

The resource focuses on the skill of counting 1 cm squares to estimate the area of a shape, using 1 cm grids. Pupils have an opportunity to briefly recap the concept of area and comparing the size of shapes, before launching into an explanation of how to estimate a shape by counting half and full squares, including recognising arrays within the shape. There is an opportunity to check understanding after each step and practise the skill.

A reasoning and problem solving question at the end of the resource will stretch children's understanding, help children to think more deeply about their learning and prepare them for independent work.
