Extend children's understanding of fractions and mixed numbers with our Year 5 Number Sequences Discussion Problem resource. We've created two problem solving questions that allow children to apply their knowledge of fractions and mathematical thinking in a small group or as part of a pair.

This resource would be perfect to have on hand for a challenge activity as part of your main lesson. Alternatively, you could display one of the problems on the screen at the end of your lesson for children to complete. We've given one modelled example for children to compare their answers with.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other and write mathematical statements > 1 as a mixed number [for example, 2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5 = 1 1/5 ]
  • Compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number
