This Chinese New Year provision enhancement resource includes a variety of activities for enhancing provision in the classroom. The activities can be used to support independent or adult-led play across 6 different areas of provision. Children will enjoy exploring and learning all about Chinese New Year. Each card includes helpful advice as well as questions that could be asked to prompt discussion.

Development Matters and Early Learning Goal Links:

3 and 4 year olds
Physical Development
Use one-handed tools and equipment, for example, making snips in paper with scissors.
Use large-muscle movements to wave flags and streamers, paint and make marks.

Literacy
Write some letters accurately.

Understanding the World
Continue developing positive attitudes about the differences between people.
Know that there are different countries in the world and talk about the differences they have experienced or seen in photos.

Expressive Arts and Design
Explore different materials freely, to develop their ideas about how to use them and what to make.
Join different materials and explore different textures.

Children in Reception
Physical Development
Develop their small motor skills so that they can use a range of tools competently, safely and confidently. Suggested tools: pencils for drawing and writing, paintbrushes, scissors, knives, forks and spoons.
Develop overall body-strength, balance, co-ordination and agility.

Literacy
Write short sentences with words with known sound-letter correspondences using a capital letter and full stop.

Understanding the World
Recognise that people have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways.

Expressive Arts and Design
Listen attentively, move to and talk about music, expressing their feelings and responses.
Watch and talk about dance and performance art, expressing their feelings and responses.

Early Learning Goal
Physical Development
Negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others.
Demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing.
Move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.
Use a range of small tools, including scissors, paint brushes and cutlery.

Literacy
Write recognisable letters, most of which are correctly formed.
Spell words by identifying sounds in them and representing the sounds with a letter or letters.
Write simple phrases and sentences that can be read by others.

Understanding the World
Know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class;

Expressive Arts and Design
Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
Perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and, when appropriate, try to move in time with music.
