EYFS Using Time Language Learning Activity

Mathematics: EYFS Exploring 2D Shapes Learning Activity

This learning activity enables children to develop their understanding of 2D shapes and their properties. Children are encouraged to go on a shape hunt around the learning environment (indoors or outdoors) looking for shapes. Children will draw the shape they have found, identify the shape and their properties. Children can cut out the shapes on page 6 to support their shape hunt. They can place the cut-out shapes on top of objects they find around the learning environment.

Development Matters Statement Links

3 and 4 year olds
(M-10) Talk about and explore 2D and 3D shapes (for example, circles, rectangles, triangles and cuboids) using informal and mathematical language: ‘sides’, ‘corners’; ‘straight’, ‘flat’, ‘round’.

Children in Reception
(M-29) Select, rotate and manipulate shapes in order to develop spatial reasoning skills.

Early Learning Goal
There is no Early Learning Goal for shape, space and measures, but it is important that the curriculum includes rich opportunities for children to develop their spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics.
