This Little Miss Muffet practical maths activity is adult-led with a clear and easy to follow structure. There are regular opportunities for discussion with suggested questions around comparing capacity. The activity then moves on to an engaging and practical task to help children develop their understanding.

Development Matters and Early Learning Goal Links:
3 and 4 year olds
Link numerals and amounts: for example, showing the right number of objects to match the numeral, up to 5.
Compare quantities using language: ‘more than’, ‘fewer than’.
Make comparisons between objects relating to size, length, weight and capacity.

Children in Reception
Count objects, actions and sounds.
Compare numbers.
Compare length, weight and capacity.

Early Learning Goal
There is no Early Learning Goal for shape, space and measures, but it is important that the curriculum includes rich opportunities for children to develop their spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics.
