This KS1 and KS2 Reading Challenge is designed to encourage children to read in fun ways over the holiday period.  It includes reading a variety of genres, to different people, in a variety of locations.​ ​

What's included in the pack?

This pack includes:

  • KS1 and KS2 reading activities for Years 1 to 6.

National Curriculum Objectives

English Year 1: Develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding by becoming very familiar with key stories, fairy stories and traditional tales, retelling them and considering their particular characteristics

English Year 2: Develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, vocabulary and understanding by becoming increasingly familiar with and retelling a wider range of stories, fairy stories and traditional tales​​

English Year 3 & Year 4: Develop positive attitudes to reading, and an understanding of what they read, by increasing their familiarity with a wide range of books, including fairy stories, myths and legends, and retelling some of these orally

English Year 5 & Year 6: Maintain positive attitudes to reading and an understanding of what they read by increasing their familiarity with a wide range of books, including myths, legends and traditional stories, modern fiction, fiction from our literary heritage, and books from other cultures and traditions

Differentiation:

Key Stage 1: 10 reading challenges to complete focused on reading to different people in different places. Aimed at pupils in Year 1 and Year 2.

Lower Key Stage 2: 14 challenges to complete, focused on reading to different people; in different locations, including a range of genres such as comics, newspapers and funny stories. Aimed at pupils in Year 3 and Year 4.

Upper Key Stage 2: 16 challenges to complete, focused on reading to different people; in different locations, including a range of reading genres such as comics, newspapers, funny stories, adventure stories and road signs. Children are also encouraged to participate in a book swap with friends, read a book recommended to them and retell a story to an adult. Aimed at pupils in Year 5 and Year 6.
